Smitty Pedals

The Smitty Pedals Compadre fuzz is based on the Shin-ei FY-2 Companion Fuzz Box.

  • Features C536 transistors as used in the original FY-2. I have built this pedal in the past with alternate transistors and the C536s definitely have a different sound.
  • The original FY-2 featured a fixed midrange (scoop) filter. The Compadre features a Scoop pot which makes the filter adjustable for much more sound flexibility and to help you sound cut through the mix. Use this in combination with the Fuzz pot to dial in your sound.
  • The original FY-2 doesn't have a lot of output volume (unity or less). The COMPADRE has been modded with a transparent boost stage at the end of the circuit for plenty of volume.
  • Hand-wired, point-to-point circuit board.
  • True Bypass Switching.
  • Drop down resistor added to prevent popping when switching the effect on and off.
  • Ultraviolet LED
  • Battery included

Smitty Pedals (about the 4 knob version)

The Smitty Pedals Compadre fuzz is based on the Shin-ei FY-2 Companion Fuzz Box. The Compadre was recently purchased by the Black Keys for possible use as a backup to Dan Auerbach's vintage unit or part of a fly rig.

  • Features C536 transistors as used in the original FY-2.
  • The original FY-2 used a fixed midrange (scoop) filter. The Compadre features a Scoop pot which makes the filter adjustable for much more sound flexibility and to help you sound cut through the mix. Use this in combination with the other controls to dial in your sound. Also adds volume when you dial the mids back in. This control can be bypassed with the switch just below it.
  • If you have ever done any research on the Companion fuzz you are most likely aware that the original FY-2 doesn't have a lot of output volume. This is due to the fact that there is no output stage in the circuit to recover the gain lost in the tone stage which is at the end of the circuit. The COMPADRE has been modded with a transparent boost stage at the end of the circuit for plenty of volume. In response to customer feedback  and from my personal experience playing through this pedal the boost section now features a separate volume control. The boost can also be bypassed with the switch just below it. The boost also fattens up the sound a bit when you dial up the mids with the Scoop control.
  • With both the scoop and boost bypassed you get the stock FY-2 Fuzz circuit.
  • Hand-wired, point-to-point.
  • True Bypass Switching.
  • Drop down resistor added to prevent popping when switching the effect on and off.
  • Alpha Pots
  • Battery included
