As far as compressors go, less is indeed more. You want to be able to go from a little bit of light squeeze to serious squash without completely robbing your tone. A good compressor does just what you need it to and otherwise stays out of the way. How often have you stepped on your compressor, only to be reminded of how much noise and tone coloring it added to your rig? Problem solved!
After experimenting with a few designs that just didn’t cut it, I decided to follow the hype and model the Comp Box after a proven superior circuit…the famous Ross compressor. With a few modifications to the original, the Comp Box is a true gigging musician’s comp. Put it in front of your dirty amp or overdrive pedal and the sweet “sustain for days” compression comes to life. Or, run a clean Tele through it and pull and pop those strings without fear of too much brittle, piercing high end. Smooth, even, transparent compression is right at your feet whether you’re a hard rocker or a chicken picker.
