DHA ValveTone VT2 Dual Custom Bass

Dave Hall Amps (DHA)

The VT2 Dual Bass Custom from DHA is a hand built valve Overdrive and Distortion effects pedal which uses two 12AX7EH (ECC83) preamp valves to provide true valve tone, the tone generated has to be heard to be believed! It has two gain settings which are selectable via a footswitch and there is an LED to let you know when 1+2 is selected. The VT2 Dual Bass Custom has selectable Treble, Mid and Bass tone controls.

The valves are visable and have a cool blue led backlight which doubles up as the power on indicator.

Channel 1 offers low to mid gain and the user can set up a clean setting which produces great valve fat tone. The highest settings on channel 1 will overdrive the input valve to give great valve crunch.

Channel 2 starts where channel 1 stops as it is driven by it. So it starts at crunch and ends up at very high gain. At full channel 1 gain into full channel 2 gain the gain is almost out of control and totally wild!

By using the by-pass, and the 1+2 footswitches then 3 playing settings are available.

Both channel 1 and 2 have two main modes of operation, Overdrive Distortion and Clipping (Fuzz) Distortion . Overdrive is achieved by using all four gain stages in the two 12AX7EH valves to generate the classic valve pre-amp overdrive tone when 1+2 is selected and only two valve stages when channel 1 is selected.

There is also a Boost switch which switches in extra clean volume using a low noise op-amp, this is useful with low gain settings that still require the output volume. The valves are run a 24V DC so valve soft clipping is generated at low signal levels and this is amplified by the op-amp to provide lots of overdrive volume.

The VT2 Dual B ass Custom will act just like a high gain valve pre-amp when used with a modern solid state amp and it sounds fantastic with valve amps by keeping the signal path pure. The VT2 Dual Bass Custom will even sound great when plugged directly into a desk or a digital recording setup.

There are 4 other switches, Tone by-pass, Colour, Fat and T/B. Fat adds bass and gain while the T/B boosts the treble. The Colour switch has 3 positions, 1, 2 and centre off, positions 1 and 2 add different types of "Colour" which increases the gain, distortion and compression. Tone By-pass provides a true by-pass of the tone circuit.

There are three selectable types of Distortion:

  1. Valve overdrive - Classic preamp overdrive, Overdrive mode.
  2. Silicon Diode Clipping - Hard Clipping Fuzz.
  3. Germanium Diode Clipping - Soft Clipping Fuzz.

There is a Gain control for each channel, Boost Volume and a Master level to let you select that tone you been looking for!

There is a 2-1 level control, this sets the amount of overdrive generated as channel 2 drives channel 1. There is also a i/p pad level control on the bass version which is useful with high output pickps and active basses.

There is a solid footswitch for true by-pass with an effect on LED.

The VT2 Dual Bass Custom runs from a 9-12V DC 1200mA supply via a standard 2.1mm socket. There are blue LED backlights which act as power on indicators.
