[interview] Uchoa: Celio Uchoa

Here's FXDB's interview with Celio Uchoa of Uchoa:

How did Uchoa start?

Curiosity and the desire to make my own effects, is what led me to build them.

In 1989, I started building pedals with a friend, it was a hobby but I thought about more serious production.

In 1989 when I started, things were very difficult, we had no internet and all that information about DIY. What inspired me were the guitar sounds I heard on vinyl records, sounds of pedals and some manufacturers of the time.

Where does the name come from?

The name is my last name. I wanted something simple and easy to understand.

What sets Uchoa apart from other builders?

  1. Professional ethics
  2. Our manufacturing process is careful and responsible.
  3. We leave the client completely satisfied.

How do you start on a new pedal?

I have an idea first, then I start putting the theory into practice and after that I start testing. If I don't like the result, I start all over again.

Sometimes it really takes too long to get ready.

How do you name your pedals?

I don't give them special names.

Can you tell us something about the production process?

I build all pedals at home.

The circuits are on PCB's with conventional components (not SMD), soldered by hand. The enclosures are Hammond 1590BB boxes that are powder coated and silk screened.

Is parts selection important?

Yes! The quality of the components is very important.

Which of your pedals makes you most proud?

The Uchoa Pure Drive, it's used by the famous guitarist João Castilho.

Which of your pedals was your toughest build?

The Uchoa Transamp was tough because I could not find rotary switches of the quality I wanted.

Which of your pedals is the most popular?

Uchoa Transamp, it is a very versatile amp simulator.

Who uses your pedals and for which genres?

I think my pedals are versatile and cover a lot of genres and diverse audiences.

One of the people using my pedals is João Castilho.

What does the future of Uchoa look like?

I want to manufacture on a larger scale while maintaining the same level of quality.

The focus first is the recognition of my work, offering excellent quality pedal,s the rest is a resul.

Are you working on any new products?
