[interview] Orion Effekte: Jan van Triest

Here's FXDB's interview with Jan van Triest of Orion Effekte:

How did Orion Effekte start?

I'm an electronic technician and musician, so I started to build stompboxes for myself. Then friends asked me to build pedals for them, then friends of friends asked me... Now it's my profession to build pedals.

Where do the name and logo come from?

"Orion" was my nickname in the band I played, "Effekte" is the German word for "effects". On the first units I built for friends I used the name "Orion Effekte".

I like the heart-symbol. And the first time, I built a guitar pedal in a heart-shaped-box, I liked it so much, that I put wings on it, and used it as logo.

What sets Orion Effekte apart from other builders?

Our pedals sounds pretty own/special - not everyone likes the sound. So it's no "pop-pedals". We use that special scratchy box design, and all our pedals are labeled in German.

How do you name your pedals?

I try to choose names that work in German and in English. Like "Motor Fuzz", "Western Drive", "Elektro Booster" ... ("Western" isn't German, but it's common. "Elektro" is not English, but I think you'll know the meaning!?)

Can you tell us something about the production process?

I'm building all pedals by myself in my workshop.

Everything is handmade by one person: wiring, PCB-assembly, enclosure-drilling, -painting and -printing.

How important is the look of your pedals?

It's very important. I use my special scratchy look. Every pedal is "handscratched" - so no pedal looks like the other. The labels are written by a typewriter and handprinted on the boxes.

How important is parts selection?

I try to use / find high-quality and high-durable parts. I'm always looking for better parts, to optimize the pedal.

Which of your pedals makes you most proud?

I like all of my pedals in a special way. I wouldn't release a pedal that I don't love!

Who uses your pedals and for which genres?

The wife of the "Monster Magnet"-guitarist ordered a heart-shaped-fuzz-box. There are a lot of German bands and musicians who use my pedals, for example "Richard Kruspe" of "Ramstein", "Torsten Scholz" of "Beatsteaks", "Rick McPhail" of "Tocotronic",...
