[interview] MZ Effects: Michael Zerah

Here's FXDB's interview with Michael Zerah of MZ Effects:

How did MZ Effects start?

Like many builders, I built pedals for myself at first because I'm a rock guitarist... :)

I get my inspiration from the Sola Sound/Colorsound company and D*A*M effects, I always use the original vintage components from the 60's/70's, the same found in the original Tone Benders of those years.

Where do the name and logo come from?

The name is just my initials with "effects" :)

There's no real logo at the moment, sometimes I use a star in a circle.

Can you tell us something about the production process?

I'm alone to build and I spend a very long time to reach perfection, I mainly build Tone Bender style pedals and the most difficult part is finding the original good transistors.

for my Tone Bender replica I only use "strip board" .

How important is the look of your pedals?

I search a very luxurious design for my pedals, perhaps one day I'll include gold to build my pedal :)))

Is parts selection important?

I only use NOS parts, it's very expensive and difficult to get the true vintage components.

Which of your pedals is the most popular?

I only have a very small production so I can make better pedals. I see my pedals as art, I don't want spend my time to build bad sounding effects...

I just build about 1-3 pedals/month.

Who uses your pedals and for which genres?

I make pedals for guitar players who want the great retro tone of the 60's and 70's.

Sometimes I make pedals for famous players too.
