[interview] Exar Electronix: Leszek Gruszka

Here's FXDB's interview with Leszek Gruszka of Exar Electronix:

How did Exar Electronix start?

I was a musician playing guitar and I studied electronics. In the early 80's pedals were very expensive in Poland, so we decided to build pedals.

We had a friend in the United States, who worked in the service of a pedals. He sent to us a lot of schemes.

Where do the name and logo come from?

The name was created from a combination of two words: exclusive-art.

The first logo we created ourselves, the logo for series "04" of the pedals was made by a friend, a graphic designer, by our suggestions.

What sets Exar Electronix apart from other builders?

We have our own philosophy. We use own, unique solutions.

We use only high-quality of elements to production.

How do you start on a new pedal?

Frequently we listen to the opinion of musicians and their suggestions. Then comes the vision of a new pedal. The process of creating a new pedal is very complicated. Often certain parts are not available and you have to build it yourself.

How do you name your pedals?

There are a few pedals, whose names are a result of testing by various professional guitarists. For example: Moby Dick, Kamikaze, taBassCo and Tuber.

Can you tell us something about the production process?

All pedals are built inhouse.

We design the PCB's ourselves and we order it from professional companies. We add the components ourselves by hand.

Our enclosures are made of an aluminum-zinc alloy and we use powder painting and screen printing to finish them.

How important is the look of your pedals?

The EXAR pedals have always had a characteristic look.

Is parts selection important?

In our pedals use only the best components. We prefer a few well-known brands.

For us it's most important that the concrete element realizes our expectations.

Which of your pedals makes you most proud?

I'm a little surprised by this question :-)

There are many such pedals. I am especially fond of those in which I used my own unique solutions.

Which of your pedals was your toughest build?

A lot of our pedals require individual selection of components. This takes a lot of time, but thanks to this the sound is excellent.

Which of your pedals is the most popular?

There are a few pedals. They are very popular because they have a great sound.

Who uses your pedals and for which genres?

We try to do pedals different, better than those on the market.

Often we made small changes in our pedals at the request of well-known musicians.

What does the future of Exar Electronix look like?

Currently we are preparing to introduce the series "05" of the pedals, which will have a "silent true bypass" switch controlled by the processor.

Are you working on any new products?

Soon the first pedals in the series "05" will appear. We're going a bit back to our first pedals with this series, but using the latest technology.
