Here's FXDB's interview with Yoshi Murata of Crews Maniac Sound.

Cerws Corp. is owned by Kikuo Yoshioka and located in Shibuya-Ku, Tokyo, Japan.

Manager for the Crews Maniac Sound (Crews Corp.) Stompbox series is Yoshi Murata.

How did Crews Maniac Sound start?

We started manufacturing pedals after a customer's request for a good Tube Overdrive in Japan. Later followed by requests for an Octave-up pedal, a natural preamp and a power attenuator.

Crews Maniac SoundWhere does the name come from?

The name refers to our crew and customers pursuing a GOOD sound. People who purchase our instruments have a desire which pursues sound. When we fulfill the request, the customer has a new one. The brushed up tone is set to maniac.

What sets Crews Maniac Sound apart from other builders?

We respect other pedal manufacturers but we never want to copy or modify them. So our engineer draws a schematic from a scratch. We are always try to make an Original Pedal.

How do you start on a new pedal?

Crews Maniac Sound Classic OverdriveWe start building a new pedal by the comments/responses from our customers and listening to the market. The time to develop a pedal really depends on the project.

How do you name your pedals?

When you drink a beer, they pop up. YOU KNOW???

Bring me more S A P P O R O !!!

Can you tell us something about the production process?

All of our products are built by our engineer.

Crews Maniac Sound SpreaderThe manufacturing of the enclosures (iron + wood panels) and PCB's and the screen painting of the enclosures are done by an external company. The pedals are made by only 1 craftsman.

How important is the look of your pedals?

Is parts selection important?

I have a few brands of parts that I love to use, but my engineer has no interest on them. He says: "If the schematic is right, the sound will be right".

Which of your pedals makes you most proud?

The Genius Over Drive. One you hear it, you will understand.

Crews Maniac Sound Genius Over DriveWhich of your pedals was your toughest build?

All our pedals are equally tough. Our engineer draws the schematics from scratch. No copy, No re-design and No reference.

Which of your pedals is the most popular?

The Genius Over Drive. We just made what we didn't see on the market. That's why the G.O.D. stands out.

Who uses your pedals and for which genres?

Occasionally we make pedals for a specific genre.

We don't make any contracts with (famous) musicians. They may use our pedals or they may not.

Crews Maniac Sound QuadriveWhat are you working on now?

Except for the Genius Over Drive we also produce the Quadrive, which we released in November, 2011. It is very amplifier-like and is a natural pedal. Please check a sample.

We also make the Speader, a limited edition analog chorus pedal, released in December, 2011. We made 200 pieces of those. They use N.O.S Matsushita BBD chips (made in Japan).
